Insurance Competency Framework

Following extensive consultation with employers and employees across the insurance market, the CII has launched its updated Insurance Competency Framework.

Available free via download, the framework provides an authoritative, objective way for firms to identify the competencies required by individuals within their organisations. For individuals it will facilitate their personal development and career progression.

Crucially, the framework is structured around competencies rather than specific job roles. This caters for the wide variations that exist in job roles from company to company. This approach allows employers to select the competencies that are relevant to their particular circumstances and requirements, and build a competency profile for each job role within their organisation.

Indeed, employers can use the framework as the basis of a bespoke competency framework.

The structure of the framework addresses:

  • Competencies – core areas of knowledge and skills required for all roles within insurance, such as legal, regulatory and insurance principles
  • Specialist competencies – knowledge and skills needed specifically for roles in the three key areas of underwriting, intermediaries and claims

The flexible nature of the framework means that is can be used by businesses from across the insurance market, both in the UK and globally. It will aid regulatory compliance, provide structure and momentum to staff development activity and, ultimately, enhance performance.
