How Laura prepared for returning to work after a career break

How did Laura use the Professional Map?

Prior to starting her new role, Laura reinstates her membership with the CII, and feels the new Professional Map tool would be beneficial to use. She carries out the self-assessment under Claims Band 3 to identify potential areas which could be improved upon.

As anticipated, she scored highly in the claims and core practice sections, which gives her confidence in her strengths, however identified some weakness in areas such as Ethics and Compliance along with Data and Technology. This doesn't surprise her as much has changed in these areas during her time off work.

Laura has several meetings with her manager during her induction process, and together they create a clear development plan for the coming year:

  • She signs up to a webinar offered by her Local Institute on new legislation affecting the motor insurance industry.
  • She also plans to attend their upcoming social event, to build her confidence and enhance her networking skills.
  • She joins an employer-led IT programme, which will provide her with methods to improve her efficiency and productivity when working with data.
